What Happened In This Airport Crash?

We have learned that one man was killed and two others suffered serious injuries after a crash that happened in early July at San Francisco International Airport. SF Police say that the incident occurred at around 3:30 p.m. and they responded to reported that a black SUV had jumped a curb and struck three pedestrians in the arrivals area of the international terminal.

When they arrived, they found two men and one woman suffering from serious, life-threatening injuries. They were all transported to the hospital. One man later died from his injuries.

Police say that they did not suspect any impairment on the part of the driver of the Ford Expedition that slammed into the pedestrians. The 46-year-old driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Pedestrian Crashes Can Be Devastating

According to the latest reporting data from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), we know that there were 811 California pedestrian fatalities in 2017. Pedestrian fatalities increase by 14.2% from 2013 to 2017.

However, pedestrian fatalities only give us part of the overall picture. We know that there are thousands of others injured in pedestrian crashes who survive and must deal with the consequences. There were 15,200 California pedestrian crash injuries in 2017.

When the OTS asked Californians what they thought the biggest safety problems on the roadway were, they said:

  1. Speeding and aggressive driving
  2. Distracted driving because of texting
  3. Bad road surfaces
  4. Distracted driving because of talking
  5. Drunk driving

Pedestrians have no way to protect themselves from the force of a vehicle. These crashes usually happen unexpectedly and can lead to serious pedestrian injuries, including:

  • Traumatic brain injuries/head injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries/paralysis
  • Internal organ damage/internal bleeding
  • Broken or dislocated bones
  • Severe lacerations or amputations
