Those who are out on foot in San Francisco should not have to worry about being struck by careless or negligent drivers. Unfortunately, pedestrian accidents are not uncommon in the city. That was proven true as soon as the new year rolled around when three pedestrians were injured in a single day due to collisions with vehicles. At Allegiance Law, our qualified and experienced San Francisco pedestrian accident attorneys are here to help victims secure the compensation they deserve.

January 2 proved to be a dangerous day

We wish pedestrians in San Francisco could have gotten off to a better start for 2020. Unfortunately, on just the second day of the year, there were three separate pedestrian accidents. Two of the incidents caused life-threatening injuries, while one caused less serious injuries.

There are several changes coming to downtown San Francisco that could help curb the pedestrian accident problem, including the closure of part of Market Street to private vehicles at the end of January. Beginning on January 29, a 2.2 mile stretch of downtown Market Street will no longer allow private vehicle traffic. Only commercial vehicles will be allowed on this stretch of roadway. Not even rideshare drivers will be allowed on this stretch of roadway. This change is expected to cut down on the number of pedestrian accidents.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, there have been more than 100 injury-causing collisions on that section of Market Street. That street has five of the Top 10 most dangerous intersections in the city.

“Unfortunately, crashes in San Francisco are an everyday occurrence,” said Jodie Medeiros, the Executive Director of WalkSF. That group tracks accident statistics and says that there were 18 pedestrian fatalities in the city in 2019, an increase from 13 fatalities the previous year.

Across the state, the Office of Traffic Safety says that there were 15,200 total pedestrian injuries and 858 total pedestrian fatalities during the latest reporting year. It is not uncommon for pedestrians to suffer from the following injuries due to a pedestrian versus vehicle collision:

  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Bone fractures and dislocations
  • Loss of or damage to a bodily organ
  • Dismemberment or amputation
  • Other injuries that lead to permanent disability
