Today, we want to discuss a recent suspected DUI crash that injured five people. DUI crashes are often devastating for everyone involved.

What happened in this horrific crash?

On Sunday, Oct. 13, five people were injured, three of them critically, when an alleged hit-and-run driver slammed into them head-on near Alamo Square. The crash happened at around 8 p.m. at the intersection of Divisadero and Grove Streets.

Police say that the driver responsible was suspected of being drunk and had just been involved in a fender bender. When the suspect tried to speed away, they ran a red light and struck another vehicle. They then drove down the opposite direction and slammed into a third car head-on.

The driver of the third vehicle struck was critically wounded and was listed in “grave condition” at the hospital. Four others suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Police suspect drugs and alcohol were used by the hit-and-run driver, and this incident is currently under investigation.

DUI crashes often lead to serious injuries

It is not uncommon for us to see vehicle accidents on a daily basis. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), there were more than 273,000 injuries and nearly 4,000 total fatalities as a result of crashes during the latest reporting year. While any crash has the potential for injuries, those involving alcohol or drugs are often the most devastating. It is not uncommon for our San Francisco car accident lawyers to see the following injuries in the aftermath of a DUI crash:

  • Traumatic brain injuries/head injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries/paralysis
  • Internal organ damage/internal bleeding
  • Broken or dislocated bones
  • Severe lacerations or amputations

The OTS says that 31% of all fatal traffic crashes were caused by an impaired driver. These incidents led to more than 26,000 injuries, many of them just like the ones mentioned in the story above.
