February 26 in San Francisco was a dangerous day for pedestrians. Two people were struck that night, one of them killed by a hit-and-run driver.

The first incident took place at California Street and 18th Avenue at around 8 p.m. A 64-year-old woman was in a crosswalk when she was struck by a silver sedan. The woman was killed and the vehicle fled the scene. As of this writing, the suspect has not been caught.

The second incident took place at First and Howard streets when a 47-year-old man was struck by a box truck at around 10:30 that same night. The man was trapped under the truck and dragged for half a block. The victim was injured but survived and the truck driver was arrested.

The Hit-And-Run Reality

Hit-and-run crashes are not rare. In fact, for the latest reporting year in California, there were:

  • 19,996 hit-and-run crashes
  • 351 hit-and-run fatalities
  • 25,995 hit-and-run injuries

Hit-and-run crashes can be deadly, particularly when they involve pedestrians.

When a person is struck by a vehicle, they are likely to sustain serious injuries. For the latest year of data, there were 867 pedestrian crash fatalities and 14,215 pedestrian crash injuries. It is not uncommon for pedestrian crash victims to sustain:

  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Internal organ damage/bleeding
  • Severe lacerations and crush injuries
  • Broken and dislocated bones

The cost of treating these injuries can become tremendous. When you think about the costs, you probably think of medical care. It is true, the medical costs of the above injuries can reach into the tens and even hundreds of thousands of dollars. Unfortunately, they are not the only costs that are associated with crashes. There are also many hidden costs to consider:

  • Income a person loses if they cannot work
  • Extended rehabilitation time
  • In-home care needs
  • Home and vehicle modifications
  • Immeasurable pain and suffering
  • Emotional and psychological damages

Insurance companies are not going to voluntarily take all of that into account when they are considering a settlement amount. In fact, they may even fight you when it comes to receiving a settlement at all. You need to know where to turn for help.
