When you are out and about on foot around San Francisco, the last thing you should have to worry about is being struck by a vehicle. Unfortunately, pedestrian crashes happen all too often. When you need a pedestrian accident lawyer in San Francisco, you can count on us to help. The team at Allegiance Law understands these cases and will work to secure the compensation you need. Today, we want to talk about a recent crash that injured one pedestrian and killed another.

What happened in this case?

We have learned that one pedestrian was killed and another one sustained life-threatening injuries after a two-car crash in late July. The incident happened at the intersection of Taylor and O-Farrell Streets.

The San Francisco Police Department says they arrived at an early afternoon crash on July 21 to find that a woman driving a Tesla was speeding when she ran a red light. One investigator said that it appeared that the Tesla was traveling at approximately 45 mph at the time it went through the intersection and broadsided a Mini Cooper. The Mini Cooper then spun out of control and struck the two pedestrians walking in the crosswalk.

The victims were a couple visiting from Clovis, California. The husband died from his injuries, and his wife was taken to the hospital.

Neighbors and police say that this particular intersection is dangerous and that drivers always speed through. This is not an uncommon problem in San Francisco, and you can sense the frustration of Sgt. Frank Harrell when the says, “It’s very upsetting. I mean, what are we at now? 14 or 15 fatalities regarding vehicle versus ped in the city?”

When we look at the statewide numbers provided by the Office of Traffic Safety, we see that the problem is not just in San Francisco. During the latest reporting year in the state, there werw 811 total pedestrian fatalities and more than 15,000 pedestrian injuries.

All too often, we see these incidents happen in areas where the pedestrian has the right-of-way, just like the case above. The couple used the crosswalk. They should never have been struck by a vehicle. City leaders and police are going to have to do more to keep our residents and guests safe.
