San Francisco is a beautiful city that boasts some pretty impressive walker scores. Walker Scores is a way to evaluate how friendly a city is to walkers. They use metrics like proximities of grocery stores, restaurants and bars, errands, parks, schools, public transportation, and culture and entertainment. The Walk Score helps people who are moving into the area identify if they need to worry about having a car or not. San Francisco has scores that range from 90-100. That is really impressive and should tell you that the pedestrians are pretty fierce in the city. Because of these impressive scores, you would think the culture around pedestrians and driving would be just as impressive, but it’s not.

Unfortunately, there are minor injuries, catastrophic injuries, and deaths that happen every year to pedestrians in San Francisco. It was found that over 75% of pedestrian and bicycle accidents occurred in only 13% of the city. This means that frequent accidents are occurring in a concentrated area yet not much is being down to protect those who are being hurt. The City of San Francisco is attempting a “Vision Zero” project with the intent to eradicate the city of all pedestrian and cyclist deaths by 2024. Part of this project is to post signs where pedestrians and cyclists have died or been seriously injured. Amanda Lamb was struck by a car while crossing at a crosswalk. She suffered traumatic injuries and suffers from PTSD to this day. She was proud to do her part and post her own sign, but it was with a heavy heart because not everyone got to do what she did. Those who died were not able to post their own sign. This the stark reality of living in a city, but not one that should have to sustained just because that’s the dangers of living in a city.
