The good news is that San Francisco recorded the lowest number of traffic fatalities in the city’s history in 2017. The city has worked hard to improve street-level safety measures. Overall, there were only 20 traffic-related deaths that occurred on city streets, marking the lowest number since 2010. It was also 10 fewer deaths than in 2016.
Considering historical numbers, the city is doing pretty well. There were 158 fatalities in 1927.
At Allegiance Law, we are grateful that the number of traffic-related fatalities is falling, but we know there is work to do. What that story does not tell you is the number of injuries, which remain high.
Do you know what to do if you are injured in a vehicle accident?

For the latest reporting year in California, there were 3,387 fatalities and nearly 12,000 serious injuries as a result of vehicle accidents. Those numbers do not include more minor injuries, which can also result in hospital visits. Closer to home, San Francisco saw a total of 4,516 people injured or killed in traffic accidents.
Those are the numbers that the story above avoids.
We know that traffic accidents often result in serious injuries for the people involved. It is not uncommon to walk into an ER and find people with the following as a result of vehicle crashes:
Each of these injuries requires immediate and extensive medical care that can quickly rise into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. If a person requires long-term care after an injury and is unable to work, they will lose valuable income that their families need to survive.
We know that alcohol causes far too many accidents. In California, more than 25 percent of traffic-related fatalities are caused by alcohol-impaired drivers.
Just as dangerous are drivers who operate distracted and take their eyes off the road to send a text or watch a video.
We know that drivers who speed and drive aggressively are a problem on our roadways. This is something we see every day in and around the Bay area.
We know that you will have many questions in the aftermath of an accident that causes you harm, especially if the accident happened due to someone else’s negligence:
At Allegiance Law, we want to help you get some answers. We will investigate your case and work to get you the money you need for all of your accident-related expenses, including medical bills and lost income if you are unable to work.
