You may have seen the story from two weeks ago. A 75-year-old woman was struck by a truck as she crossed the road in San Francisco’s Bernal Heights neighborhood. She was in the crosswalk at the time, which means she had the right-of-way.

She was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Unfortunately, she died as a result of those injuries.

Her name was Marlene Aron. According to her Facebook page, she was an artist and her work was going to be displayed at The Reclaimed Room a few days after the accident.

We know she will be missed by her family and friends.

What This Shows

When you go out on foot, whether for a walk or to get some jogging in, we know that the last thing you think about is getting hurt. Unfortunately, you cannot control other drivers and their negligent behavior can really cause you harm.

The latest reporting year in California saw 14,215 pedestrian accident injuries. In the same year, there were 822 pedestrian injuries or deaths in San Francisco.

Pedestrian accidents are not like regular accidents. In a vehicle, people have protection from a metal vehicle frame. They have airbags and seatbelts.

Pedestrians have no protection from the impact of a vehicle. When they get hit, they almost immediately have a second impact with the ground.

This usually means that there are not many minor injuries – pedestrian accidents cause major injuries.

  • Broken or dislocated bones
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Internal organ damage

Most of these require major medical interventions, including surgery, to save someone’s life. In the aftermath, a person with these injuries often must undergo long period of rehabilitation before they get back to normal.

Sometimes, they have a permanent disability and are unable to return to work or do the things they love.

The medical costs alone for these injuries can reach the hundreds of thousands of dollars in the first year of treatment, but they are not the only costs associated with accidents like this. If you can no longer work, you and your family will lose income and benefits.

We also want to mention that the psychological and emotional trauma of these accidents can become overwhelming.
